23/11/2021 – Bro Luke Payne (Senior Deacon – Lodge Eltham) gave a fascinating talk about Vikings; a seafaring people from Scandinavia that traded, raided and settled throughout Europe during the 8th to late 11th centuries. Their voyages throughout the Mediterranean as well as Russia, North America and the Middle East were discussed. It was explained that their influence on culture and genetics has had a profound influence throughout the world to this day. Luke founded Jorth Gar in 2005, a re-enactment society that has over 100 members. Since that time, Jorth Gar has been expanding and training its members with a reputation for quality troops and equipment. They are renowned for military drill, professionalism and discipline on the field of battle. As a blacksmith and craftsman Luke reconstructs Viking equipment including swords, scabbards, shield, armour, footwear and leather goods. The highlight of the talk was a demonstration of a Viking shield as a defence, and as an offensive weapon, along with a beautifully recreated high-status sword found in Gotland, Sweden.
